No studded belt, no teased hair, no band shirt. Still, everyone in the carriage knows immediately which direction this person belongs to. That is exactly where the look we are talking about sits.

The real work in this style happens below. Nu Goth almost always works with volume below the hips: wide cargos, long jorts, straight-cut denim or a knee-length skirt over opaque tights. The top stays narrow in return.

This ratio is why the look works without a single symbol being involved. A wide bottom and a tight top produce a silhouette that is readable from twenty metres away. Colour only reinforces it.

If you cannot decide between two pairs of trousers, take the wider one. Nu Goth forgives too much fabric far more easily than too little. Dark jeans that are too tight tip the look towards two-thousands rock music.

That is exactly the difference to a costume. You put a costume on for one evening. A style decision reorders the whole wardrobe, and from then on getting dressed in the morning paradoxically gets faster.

The most common question on the topic is what actually makes a Goth girl. With Nu Goth the answer is unspectacular: a dark base, a sheer layer, a hard shoe and silver jewellery. No corset, no forty-minute make-up routine.

What many underestimate: in this style the tights are a load-bearing piece, not an accessory. Opaque instead of fishnet, because fishnet pushes the look straight back towards Trad Goth. If you do not want that jump, stay with a smooth surface.

If you are unsure between the branches of the family, read across them once. The neighbouring styles share many pieces but differ clearly in how much print and colour they use.

For men Nu Goth runs on proportion. A long top over wide trousers plus a heavy shoe gives you the basic shape. Everything else is detail: a chain, a ring, maybe a cap with a small print.

The classic mistake is reaching for a band shirt. A band shirt turns Nu Goth into Metal or Mall Goth immediately, because it claims an allegiance this style deliberately leaves open. A plain washed longsleeve does the same job visually without reparking the style.

Washed grey is the most underrated tone in this style altogether. It reads as dark, but it takes the hardness out of an all-black outfit and makes texture visible that disappears on black.

From autumn on the outer layer becomes the most important piece, because it is visible nine hours out of ten. Sets solve that problem elegantly, because top and bottom are already matched in colour and the contrast comes purely from the layers underneath.

A set is also the fastest way to test the style without swapping half your wardrobe. If the silhouette fits, you keep buying in that direction. If it does not, you have one piece in front of you and not a collection.
