Hardstyle (NL-DE axis). More function on show. Tactical vest or webbing belt, cargo with several visible pockets, lined shorts or a nylon pant. High sneaker or mid-cut trail boot. Black still dominates, but reflector strips, a carabiner on the belt, a belt bag or holster construction are allowed. Dominator, Defqon.1, Q-Base, Decibel — outfits here are sport-functional, not high fashion.

Open-air festival (field axis). Lighter dark tones allowed — dark olive, stone grey, anthracite. On top a thin tank, mesh or mock-neck. Below wide-leg cargo or cargo shorts. A bucket hat makes sense here (UV protection). The shoe is a trail runner, Salomon XT-6 or New Balance — combat boots on the field turn into a sauna in the shoe after 6 hours. Fusion, Garbicz, Nation of Gondwana, Polifonic — the code is closer to outdoor Workwear than to the club.

The rule: know the sound, know the venue, then build the outfit. Walk into Berghain in a Hardstyle cargo vest and you're saying „tourist“. Walk onto the Fusion field in skinny jeans plus a print tank and you're saying „first festival summer“.

In summer rave the top carries the biggest risk of sitting wrong. A dense T-shirt at Berghain at 4 a.m. — result: soaked through, sticky, the rest of the outfit has to compensate. A tank that's too loose — result: it slips while you dance, you keep fixing it. Both mistakes are avoidable if the material and cut choice is right early on.

Three top types work for men in summer rave: first, a mesh tank or mesh long-sleeve — breathes maximally, looks good in the club, looks good in the day heat. Second, a mock-neck tank with a high collar — a structured look, no jewellery needed, the neck stays supported. Third, a thin sleeveless cardigan over a bare torso — the Berlin summer statement look. What doesn't work: print T-shirts with a big front print (in summer it looks like a souvenir from festival 2019), printed jersey hoodies (too warm), an oversize tee in shiny polyester.

The bottom choice decides whether you can still walk after 8 hours of dancing. Skinny has been dead since 2019 — in summer too. Stay tight on the leg and after two hours in the club you have chafed inner thighs and, first, can't dance any more, second, can't climb stairs the next day. Volume below isn't a fashion choice, it's function.

Three bottom types work. First, cargo shorts (knee-length or slightly above) for the field and open-air at 30 degrees. Second, a wide-leg cargo pant or distressed wide-leg jeans for indoor clubs (Berghain, Sisyphos — where it cools down in the evening and you're glad of the pant). Third, jorts — the distressed jeans of the 90s cut into shorts — back since 2024, especially in the Berlin scene. Avoid: skinny jeans, joggers that are too thin (slip while you dance), cargo shorts with a camouflage print (military cosplay, not Rave).

If the cut choice is hard: take distressed wide-leg denim or convertible jeans you still wear long in May and as jorts in August. Same cut, double the season.

Shoes are the only spot in the outfit where the season logic beats the sub-genre logic. Even the darkest Berlin Techno code accepts a sneaker in high summer — if it has the right silhouette. Salomon XT-6, Asics Gel-Kayano 14, New Balance 1906R — all three have been firmly established in the techno summer since 2022. Combat boots belong in the indoor club at moderate temperatures; on a 32-degree field they turn into a sauna.

On accessories the rule is: everything has to stay on the body when you dance. A belt bag cross-body over the chest is the default. A carabiner keychain on the belt or pant rather than loose in the pocket. One silver chain, one ring. Sunglasses reflect the midday sun at the open-air; inside the club, off. What doesn't work: a backpack (can't dance, blocks the rows), too many chains (they clink, snag, tear), a hat with a brim wider than 8 cm (dangerous in the pit).

If you want to keep the look minimal, you need exactly three accessories: belt bag, sunglasses, one chain. Everything beyond that is optional and only comes once you're confident enough in your style not to look overloaded.

The 90s raver look has been back since 2023 — but selectively. Not the complete outfit from 1996, but individual elements that integrate into today's dark summer rave code. The one detail where a summer rave outfit for men really tips over is the layer system. An outfit that works at 4 p.m. on the open-air field has to still work at 04:30 in the indoor club — with a 12-degree temperature difference.
